Transport Platform or Construction Hoist?

How to choose the right solution for your project

Key Differences

Load capacity and lifting height are often similar.

The main differences are how the machine is used on site, the applicable regulations and the passenger operating speed.

Transport Platforms

A transport platform is designed to move both people and materials between different levels of a construction site.

The platform is equipped with landing gates and loading ramps. When closed, these ramps also act as the platform’s side protection.

Because passengers do not travel inside a fully enclosed cabin, EN 16719 limits the maximum speed to 12 m/min when people are on board.

When transporting materials only, the speed can typically increase to 24 m/min.

Transport platforms are particularly appreciated on projects where loading and unloading operations are frequent and ease of material handling is a priority.

The loading ramps allow direct access for materials, equipment and small handling devices.

Some transport platforms, including the EUROSCAF ESC range, can be equipped with large side loading openings, allowing direct loading with forklifts or other handling equipment.

Construction Hoists

Construction hoists are also designed to transport both people and materials.

Unlike transport platforms, construction hoists are equipped with a fully enclosed cabin and comply with EN 12159.

The enclosed cabin allows higher operating speeds while maintaining passenger safety and comfort.

Construction hoists are commonly used on high-rise projects where large numbers of workers need to move quickly between different levels throughout the day.

Acceleration and deceleration must be carefully controlled to ensure a smooth ride and avoid uncomfortable movements for passengers.

Like transport platforms, construction hoists can stop at multiple landing levels and are equipped with landing gates.

Construction hoists are typically equipped with a fully enclosed cabin, providing ample space for both personnel and bulky materials.

However, construction hoists are generally not equipped with loading ramps. Materials are usually loaded directly from the floor level or with suitable handling equipment.

The Real Difference

The choice is not determined by load capacity or lifting height, but by how the machine will be used throughout the project.

Both solutions can transport people and materials and can serve multiple landing levels.

The real difference lies in the intended use of the machine.

A transport platform is often chosen when loading and unloading operations are frequent and ease of material handling is a priority.

A construction hoist is generally preferred when higher passenger speeds, greater transport comfort and intensive movement of personnel are required.

For this reason, the best solution depends on the daily operation of the project rather than on lifting capacity alone.

There is no universally better solution. The best machine is the one that matches your project’s daily operational needs.
